PayPal owned payments business Zettle has revealed that businesses no longer need a dongle to use the system.
In Brief:
Previously the SMEs that use the payment system had to have a separate device.
Now, they can take payments directly on their Android devices with no need for additional hardware.
The functionality will be available to small and medium sized businesses in the UK, Sweden and the Netherlands.
What does this mean?
FinTechs have been increasingly filling a gap to provide payment services for SMEs which can be incredibly costly. One major cost is buying and maintaining the necessary hardware, so companies like Zettle (which was bought by PayPal in 2021) are seeking to resolve this by enabling customers to take payments directly from a smartphone which they likely already have.
The news comes shortly after Apple announced in February it would enable Tap to Pay on iPhone for US merchants.
