Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, has launched a payments service on the platform.
In Brief:
-
People can send money and make purchases within the WhatsApp app.
-
This is the first country where the service will be fully rolled out.
-
It has been testing payments in India for a couple of years.
What does this mean?
Facebook says it wants to make payments “as easy as sharing photos” – users will be able to send money to their WhatsApp contacts and authorise it using a PIN or biometrics. At the moment people will be able to link various Visa and Mastercard debit cards to their WhatsApp account.
