Social media giant Facebook has extended Facebook Pay outside of its own platform.
In Brief:
Facebook Pay started in 2019 as a payments service across Facebook Messenger as well as Instagram and WhatsApp, which Facebook owns.
In August US firms will be able to use Facebook Pay as a payment options.
It will be available as a payments option at checkouts from various merchants, not just within Facebook.
What does this mean?
It means Facebook, which already owns key social media platforms, is expanding outside of its own platform to work with other merchants, like Google and Apple Pay – it's starting with Shopify in the US but could be rolled out further.
