Aldi uses face recognition to estimate age

Aldi is using facial-age estimation technology for alcohol sales in stores.

In Brief:

Aldi has opened its first checkout-free store in London.

It will use facial recognition technology to authorise the purchase of alcohol.

Customers can download the Aldi Shop&Go and will not have to go through a checkout.

What does this mean?

The payments system, involving cameras, is provided by AiFi while the facial recognition technology is provided by Yoti. Customers will confirm their age via the app and then be recognised when they are in store.
