Starling has begun issuing Mastercard debit cards made with recycled plastic.
In Brief:
The cards are made up of 75% recycled plastic, with the non-recycled elements being aspects like the chip and magnetic stripe.
Starling is the first bank in the UK to issue such cards.
They’re made from rPVC from Mastercard’s Sustainable Materials Directory.
What does this mean?
Starling says it is using rPVC to reduce the demand for new plastic production, which is currently high as the majority of debit cards in the UK are made from first-use PVC. Reportedly, two kilos of CO2 are saved for every kilo of rPVC used instead of PVC.
