Prominent Twitter accounts hacked in Bitcoin scam

The company says it was victim of a social engineering attack

In Brief

  • Hackers were able to take over the Twitter accounts of Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Kanye West Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Apple.
  • The accounts tweeted fake messages to send Bitcoin and the famous people would send back double the money.
  • The attack took place over several hours prompting Twitter to stop all verified accounts from tweeting at all – an unprecedented measure.

What does this mean?

The size of the attack and the coordinated hijacking of the verified communications streams of world leaders, celebrities and major corporate accounts is concerning to security experts because it suggests that the hackers could have easily caused much more havoc.
