Starbucks introduces NFC-enabled pen

Starbucks has introduced a pen linked to a digital wallet.

In Brief:

  • Customers in Japan can now pay for their coffee with a pen.

  • The pen uses FeliCa technology.

What does this mean?

The pens will set users back around $40 with $10 credit pre-loaded onto the device – so it will be interesting to see how these sell given many customers can already use contactless cards and phones. FeliCa technology is widely used in Japan.
